Like most Americans, 23-year-old Jennifer Grout can’t speak Arabic. Unlike most Americans, 23-year-old Jennifer Grout has not let that inconvenient tidbit stop her from singing traditional Middle Eastern music so expertly performed that she might be on her way to winning Arabs Got Talent.
Grout is profiled in the New York Times this week, and on CNN today, because not only does she have an incredible voice (seriously, watch the clip above. How does the human voice do that? Microtones what? She’s like My Brightest Diamond on the Red Sea Riviera), she’s able to sing in a language she doesn’t speak or understand with perfect pronunciation and with appropriate phrasing and emoting. And, in a style that, according to both the Times and CNN, that is seen by many youths in the region as old fashioned.
