Director Jon M. Chu Won't Let the Thai Cave Rescue Story Be Whitewashed on Screen

While there’s already one movie in development about the 12 boys who were dramatically rescued recently from a flooding cave in Thailand, Jon M. Chu, director of the forthcoming Crazy Rich Asians, doesn’t have faith that the film will accurately depict the story. Specifically, as was the case with Annihilation, Ghost in the Shell, 21, and many other films, there’s the risk that the film will be whitewashed. (Stay away, Scarlett Johansson.)

So Chu says he’s making his own movie about the Thai cave rescue to make sure that doesn’t happen. Deadline reports that Chu is attached to direct a movie based on the rescue efforts, and that the production company is in negotiations with Thailand’s navy and government to help produce the film. “Why did it take me 38 years to realize…we can fight back,” Chu tweeted with a link to the news.
