This is just a teaser trailer for Moana, but Disney’s new Pacific Islander Princess doesn’t have much of a role in it.
Disney has been coyly teasing info on Moana, drumming up excitement with an impressive talent list: the movie will include song contributions from Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and The Lion King arranger Mark Mancina.
This first teaser is dedicated to the demi-god Maui, voiced by the Rock, and his big magical fish hook. We don’t hear much from Moana herself, who is voiced by 14-year-old Hawaiian native Auli’i Cravalho. But the trailer signals more of Disney’s trademark cute animal sidekicks, slapstick comedy, and gorgeous scenic animation on display; it’ll tide us over until this princess finds her voice.
