Ferguson Descends Into Chaos as Police Tear Gas Children, Media

Latest

Ferguson was once again the scene of violence on Sunday night, as police undertook a massive offensive against crowds.

A day after Missouri governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Ferguson, violence has once again erupted in the city. Complex reported police lobbed tear gas and fired rubber bullets into a crowd where children were:

[Police] reportedly opened fire on protesters without warning just after 9 p.m. local time, shooting tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds, which included children and members of the media. The apparent unprovoked act of police aggression came shortly after a woman suffered minor gunshot injuries near the now-burned-down QuikTrip.

Police were responding to a shooting at the QuikTrip at the time. According to the police department, Molotov cocktails were thrown at their officers. Police said their command center was also attacked. Journalists on the scene reported crowds were peaceful and the actions by police were unprovoked.

Journalist Robert Klemko disputes police reports that their command center was attacked. During the offensive, he was arrested on Sunday night and released, which he documented on Twitter.

Klemko reported that media were being “quarantined” and not allowed to view protesters on Flourissant.

Today it was also reported that Michael Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head, according to the New York Times:

One of the bullets entered the top of Mr. Brown’s skull, suggesting his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr. Michael M. Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said. Mr. Brown, 18, was also shot four times in the right arm, he said, adding that all the bullets were fired into his front. The bullets did not appear to have been shot from very close range because no gunpowder was present on his body. However, that determination could change if it turns out that there is gunshot residue on Mr. Brown’s clothing, to which Dr. Baden did not have access.
