From Carol to Empire, Here Are the 2016 Golden Globe Nominees

Entertainment

Nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning and, yes, every one of the movies and TV shows you wanted to be nominated were in fact nominated and you’re going to get exactly what you want this year.

Of the movies I’ve seen with my eyes, Carol was visually breathtaking and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara deserve that best actress nomination. Steve Jobs rightfully earned Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet their respective noms for best actor and actress in a motion picture drama, and it’s not surprising to see Trainwreck recognized for best comedy given Amy Schumer’s banner year.

Did you know Joy is a comedy, too? The trailer looks like it’s a movie about nothing that wants us to know it’s good only because Jennifer Lawrence is in it, but congrats. Also, Fifty Shades of Grey is up for best motion picture.

Not! It’s nominated for best original song for Ellie Goulding’s ubiquitous “Love Me Like You Do” from the soundtrack. Heart attack averted.

As for TV shows, like last year, Orange Is The New Black is battling Silicon Valley, Transparent, plus Veep (which will probably win, but I know nothing) in the best TV comedy category. Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez and Aziz Ansari (Master of None is definitely worth watching) got proper dues for best actress and actor in a TV comedy, respectively. And I need either Viola Davis or Taraji P. Henson to win for best actress in a drama.

Bobby Finger’s reax:

“I’m glad Rooney and Cate are competing head to head, and hope The Big Short wins everything it’s nominated for just to fuck with people.”

The Golden Globes will air on January 10, 2016, with its crass and loathsome host Ricky Gervais, who’s back for the fourth time.
