Have you been wondering why there are no good musicals about millennials? Have you wondered if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Lin-Manuel Miranda were going to do anything other than collaborate on Moana? If these questions and more have been keeping you up at night, there’s a 14 minute long musical just for you.
Here is “Millennials,” a musical produced by two men who are not millennials at all, featuring a grown-up’s notion of what life is like as a millennial, complete with dabbing start-up CEO.
The plot is a tale as old as time: Crystal, a millennial wearing a crushed velvet baby doll dress, has lost her phone. She enlists the help of her neighbor Jack, a friendly accountant who uses a flip phone and carries an actual map, to help her find it. There’s dabbing. There’s EDM. There’s a polyamorous couple named Hydrogen and Harmony. There are terrible, terrible hats. And finally, there’s common ground in pity for Harambe and eventually, love.
Entertainment Weekly is quick to note that this is “satrical,” but if you watched one to two minutes of this musical, you’d know that already. If you find this sort of thing charming —maybe you do! — watch it below.
