The New York Daily News and the New York Post both report that Katie Couric is being considered as a temporary replacement for Guthrie, which would reunite her with Matt Lauer, the man she sat next to every morning from 1991 until 2006. Please note: Couric first sat at the Today anchor desk in 1991 when she was substituting for then-co-anchor Deborah Norville, who was — you guessed it — on maternity leave. Norville never came back, and the rest is TV history. Couric has her own talk show at the moment, but it ends in June. Today could get a nice ratings bump by promoting a throwback ’90s Matt and Katie reunion, even if it is temporary.
Couric’s return is not a done deal, however: Sources say that former Today co-host Meredith Vieira is also being considered as a substitute teacher. Not being considered: Your old pal Ann Curry.
