Here’s the official trailer for Loving, the Oscar-bait movie about a real interracial couple’s battle to have their marriage legally acknowledged by the state of Virginia.
The super syrupy and timely trailer, set in the 1960s, shows state officials stepping in to try to legally define the relationship between Richard Loving (played by Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), to the point that authorities burst into their bedroom at night. The movie looks both hushed in tone and intensely melodramatic at the same time, in ways that registered as boring and “too damn polite” to critics who watched a screening of the film at Cannes.
“I know we have some enemies, but we have some friends too,” Mildred says. The point of this trailer is clearly to push the Lin-Manuel message that love is love is love is love is love.
