Backstage at the V-Files runway show Wednesday night, a model’s “Think Outside the Cocks” heart-shaped wing over latex was adorned with peeled bananas and looked like the donut version of a Valentine’s Day card sticker. the piece, made by British design duo Namilia, challenged us: can you look at this banana donut without wanting to eat it? And also, goodbye to the patriarchy.
This New York Fashion Week wasn’t the first time the heart wang made its runway debut—that honor goes to the Royal College of Art graduates show, where Nan Li and Emilia Pfohl (“Namilia,” get it) passed on in May. From a collection entitled “My Pussy, My Choice,” the theme was a “celebration of the new girlhood” inspired by how Instagram has changed the way young women perceive and project themselves:
Seeing clothing as an visual expression and extension of our bodies and minds we have collaborated with the Swiss company Luft&Laune to develop custom made inflatable elements which are incorporated into the garments. They extend the physical dimension of the wearer and transform them into their larger than life girlhood icon. Seen as a radical move of rebellion, the use of phallus shapes throughout the collection ridicule and play down the ultimate symbol of power and masculinity in an ironic, youthful and provocative way.
There were also ten-food-wide snakes as bustles (an interpretation of their professed interest in Nicki Minaj), daring cut-out body suits (Azealia Banks), glittery dollar sign separates (Rihanna) and Brony ravewear (Ariana Grande). See the full collection in their Namilia Zine, or at LA Fashion Week in October.
