Rihanna's Latest Puma Collection Will Look Great On Her and Only Her

Entertainment

With one extreme-proportioned clothing line under her belt, it only makes sense that Rihanna keep this train moving with another FENTY PUMA by Rihanna collection designed to look great on Rihanna and fashion models only.

Presented at a mansion in Paris via a Tidal livestream (30 minutes late, I might add), the Spring/Summer 2017 range reveals that Rihanna is sticking with Hood By Air-meets-whatever she’s into at the moment-esque designs we saw the last time around.

Following the show, Dazed quoted her as describing the collection: “If Marie Antoinette was going to the gym and needed something to wear,” which probably explains all the corsets, though not really.

At this point, it’s clear Rihanna isn’t interested in making particularly wearable clothing, which is sort of an unexpected twist considering this is a Puma product. She also really, really wants us all to wear giant sweatpants and impractical gymwear.

This collection saw some old friends, like the extra-long durags—this time updated with lace—exaggerated proportions and clunky footwear. The color palette reflects the season, with lots of beautiful pastels that are frankly the best thing about the collection. The fabrics in general are also pretty beautiful, especially the silk Japanese-inspired patterns.

Models were accessorized with plenty of pearls, what seemed like jeweled grillz, giant bow-shaped fanny packs and lace fans that I hope make it into the retail collection. I also loved the ruffled military-style backpacks that will probably go for $200 more than I want to spend.

On the men’s side, she presented male crop tops, which I’m not at all mad about, and silk utility jumpsuits that seemed designed for Young Thug specifically.

Onto the highlights. I can’t wait to watch her rock the absolute hell out of this camisole jumsuit.

The collection also featured a number of silk maxi-dresses that are simple but nice. I especially love how one seems meant to be a nude color for black women. My favorite outfit was the burgundy jumpsuit/oversized hoodie combo but that may be mainly due to the styling.

There was also this silk bomber jacket that is probably the best representation of her Marie Antoinette-goes-to-the gym theme.

This is neither here nor there, but when she closed the show during the livestream, she was wearing the pink outfit on the left. When I watched the show again on Tidal about 20 minutes later, it had been edited to the outfit on the right.

Rihanna, it seems, is just designing clothes for herself, which I can’t really fault her for. My guess is that her sneakers and $80 fur slides have been so profitable that Puma is just letting her fuck around with this line. Good work if you can get it. I look forward to Rihanna’s next tour, where I assume she’ll exclusively be wearing FENTY PUMA by Rihanna.
