Ugly Prints and Slinky Suits at the Elle Style Awards

BeautyStyle

Last night, the Elle Style Awards — an annual ceremony hosted by the eponymous magazine to celebrate style icons and designers — took place in London.

For some, it was an opportunity to show off; for others, it was a chance to be chic and understated; and for others still, it was the perfect occasion to don ugliest thing they could find. Let’s take a look:

Katy Perry looked beautiful in an asymmetrical floral Vivienne Westwood frock; she later won Woman of the Year.

Emma Watson looked absolutely amazing in a Giambattista Valli dress from his recent spring 2014 couture line.

Cara Delevingne wore a beautiful vintage fashion-sac as well as a Mulberry bag (she just unveiled her own purse line with the company).

Rita Ora, ever a fan of the dramatic, voluminous red carpet gown, wore a tiered lace dress by Marchesa.

My favorite looks of the night: actress Tao Okamoto in a structured, prim Chanel design; model Jourdan Dunn in Tom Ford.

Looking very chic in elegant pantsuits, we have model Daisy Lowe, Model of the Year recipient (and Bradley Cooper-dater) Suki Waterhouse in Burberry Tailoring; and Victoria’s Secret model Barbara Pavlin.

Lovely in lace: model Arizona Muse; singer Foxes pairing a delicate lace top with a latex skirt; model and Cara’s sister Poppy Delevigne in golden-yellow.

In busy floral patterns: editor-in-chief of Elle UK Lorraine Candy in Peter Pilotto; socialite Tamara Ecclestone; actress Lara Pulver with quite a lot going on.

Business on top, party on the bottom: TV presenter Laura Whitmore in pastels and metallics; model/DJ Atlanta de Cadenet pairing a loose button-up with a bright, loud miniskirt.

Because this is a fashion-themed party, like half the attendees showed up in all black. Here are the best black dresses: Lily Allen in Burberry Prorsum; singer-songwriter Laura Mvula looking elegant in a long, sheer skirt; model Portia Freeman.

In a bit more attention-grabbing getups, we have Amber Le Bon in a glittery LBD with a drop-waist; supermodel Karolina Kurkova in feathers, shoulder pads and sequins — topped off with an asymmetrical hemline; and Tallulah Harlech in a cropped blazer festooned with fur.

The bad: Chesley Leyland in a leather dress that appears to be falling apart; Simone Rocha in a formal parka; Olga Kurylenko in a figure skating costume.

More bad: Ellie Goulding in a rather tacky romper; Georgina Chapman in a haunted tablecloth.

The ugly: Jessie J‘s boots. Chloe Norgard‘s tattered, bedazzled, leopard-printed jeans and her conceptual jelly shoes.

Some men: Tinie Tempah in a Perfect Suit, Pharrell and Helen Lasichanh; David Gandy in plaid; Nicola Formichetti, in high-fashion Hot Topic.
