Will Raven-Symoné's New Show Tackle Fatphobia?
LatestIn The Great State of Georgia, Raven will play Georgia, a “big, confident, curvy girl who can sing very well.”
In the pilot of the ABC Family show, Georgia moves to New York from the South, but her ex-boyfriend (who’s still madly in love with her) also shows up in New York, trying to get her to come back home. Melrose Place actor Brock Cuchna has been cast as the ex — making it an interracial relationship.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the pilot was written by author Jennifer Weiner (known for books In Her Shoes, Good In Bed and Certain Girls) and Desperate Housewives writer/producer Jeff Greenstein, and will air on ABC Family — the network that aired (and canceled) the fat camp series Huge.
The concept seems to have a lot of potential; if Georgia is a talented singer on the curvy side, she may come up against bookers, casting agents and producers who want her to lose weight. But since the character is described as confident, she may tell those folks to go to hell. Fingers crossed! (As my friend quipped, “It could be so Raven… or so-so Raven.”)
