John Travolta is making his directorial debut at the age of 72 with his new film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which he also wrote, produced, narrated, and acted in, so it’s safe to say he was wearing a lot of hats. And by “wearing a lot of hats,” I mean, he literally wore an assortment of berets all weekend at Cannes, and people noticed.

Of the berets, Travolta told CNN, “The old school directors wore berets and the glasses. And I thought, that’s what I’m doing. I’m doing an homage to being a director.” And it would seem Travolta took his own advice a little too seriously because he unveiled not one…not two…but FOUR different berets within the span of the weekend, which is the most consecutive berets worn by a single person since Sylvester Stallone’s 2023 magnum opus, Expendables 4, which didn’t win the Palme d’Or but did get 14 entire percentage points on Rotten Tomatoes.

“I’m a director this time,” Travolta added, “You’re an actor, play the part of a director. Look like an old school director,” except he looked less like an old school director and more like…John Travolta in a beret. So without further ado, please enjoy this digital archive of the emotional journey that was John Travolta’s 2026 Cannes berets.

The Navy Beret: If a French director were also a pilot

The first look of the weekend was a navy blue beret with a navy canvas jacket, which he wore as he piloted his own plane to the festival, and I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the fact that he flew his own plane to Cannes at 72 or that he got his navys to match. Propeller tells the story of a mother and son’s cross-country flight to Hollywood (based on his 1997 children’s book), so sticking with the aviation theme, Travolta went full off-duty pilot.

Little did we know this would only be the first of many berets.

The Ivory Beret: A white tie option

For the premiere, Travolta opted for something a little more “white tie” (Cannes has the strictest dress code after all). He took home the Honorary Palme d’Or this night, so I can’t say shit, can I?

The Black Beret: It goes with everything!

Travolta later stepped out for press in an all-black ensemble, because obviously he packed a black option! You never know when you’re going to need it.

The Brown Beret: French Riviera realness

For his final beret look of the weekend (that we know of), Travolta sat for more press in a chic brown beret and a brown-and-white suit. He saved the best for last. (And he looks like he has a meeting with Laura Dern at the White Lotus after this.)

Our research suggests that Travolta’s berets were fabulous, and at the end of the day, under each beret is, in fact, a bald head, so do with that information what you will.

I hypothesize he packed at least two additional carry-on bags full of berets to match any outfit, color, or animal pattern. Everything but orange—he’s not a monster.
