A TV Series Based on Alleged Sex Cult Nxivm Is Reportedly Underway

Well, that was fast.

Just a few days after Smallville’s Allison Mack was arrested (and subsequently released to house detention on a $5 million bond) for charges connected to allegations that she’d been a recruiter for alleged sex slavery cult Nxivm, it was announced on Wednesday that Annapurna Television has optioned the rights to produce a TV series based on a New York Times exposé of the group.

The article that would serve as source material, titled “Inside a Secretive Group Where Women Are Branded” was written in 2017 and reported by Barry Meier, who spoke with several former members of Nxivm, many of whom attested to the inclusion of branding in the alleged cult’s rituals. Nxivm’s leader, Keith Raniere was apprehended in Mexico last month.

According to Annapurna, via The Hollywood Reporter, the series that producers have in mind “follows what happens when women who join what they’re told is a secret sisterhood created to empower them find themselves psychologically enthralled and horrifically sexually enslaved to its leader—and their flesh branded with his initials.”

THR reports that Westworld actor Shannon Woodward is slated to executive produce, as is Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Susan Goldberg.
