  • French publishing giant Lagardère has struck a deal with Hearst to sell off all 102 of its foreign magazines, including all fifteen international editions of Elle, for some $880 million. Lagardère retains ownership of the Elle trademark. [WWD]
  • After Oscar de la Renta, Women’s Wear Daily‘s writer Bridget Foley, and members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, including CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg, publicly criticized Michelle Obama for wearing a dress by a British designer — Alexander McQueen — at the most recent state dinner, Cathy Horyn took to her blog to point out that many American designers, including Von Furstenberg herself, manufacture their clothes offshore anyway.   • Meanwhile, Diane Von Furstenberg is giving the second-ever DVF awards — an award the designer invented, to give to women working for the women’s rights and wellbeing worldwide — to Kakenya Ntaiya of Kenya and Sohini Chakraborty Saleem of India, who work with the Vital Voices Global Partnership. Each winner gets $50,000, and presumably an awesome looking plaque with “DVF Winner” or somesuch on it. You can also vote at Von Furstenberg‘s website for the People’s Choice DVF.   • New Barneys C.E.O. Mark Lee has named Amanda Brooks, the author of I Love Your Style and a creative director of now-defunct label Tuleh, as the struggling department store chain’s new fashion director. Lee has shaken up the Barneys staff, firing longtime employees like Julie Gilhart (Brooks’ predecessor) and Judy Collinson, and demoting store creative director Simon Doonan. [WWD]

He tries to explain his appeal: “I think people wanna be rebels in a society that’s very funnel-like, where everybody becomes a lawyer. People wanna be rebels, they change how they look.
