Charli XCX has officially reached the “can’t do anything right” level of stardom that comes with every successful pop diva, and a couple of pop men. After her winning streak following brat Summer, The Moment, and Wuthering Heights, it would seem a recent wave of negative feedback concerning her rock rebrand has led to a respectable Twitter crashout.
In the debut single to her new rock era titled “Rock Music,” Charli (or the alter ego that takes over whenever she is in the studio) sings, “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” The lyric upset many dance-floor purists, who believe the dance floor is NOT dead. (It’s opera/ballet all over again). “Rock Music” was not a major derailment from Charli’s usual schtick, but then again, no one was dissecting her lyricism this closely when she wisely sang, “I’m about to crash, I’m about to crash, I’m about to crash, I’m about to crash, I’m about to crash,” back in 2022. Four years later, Charli is actually crashing upon discovering the hate that follows after becoming the moment.
excited for you all to hear this new music. i can only ever make what feels true to me. i’m not thinking about anything else while i’m making it. not reception or audience or anything else. just my connection with it and whether it feels honest to me.

if you get me, you get me and if you don’t, you don’t. and thats ok <3

i’m not trying to repel people away or convince people into liking me. i’m doing what i feel is truthful to me. i think existing as a human being in 2026 is really hard for a multitude of different reasons. my solace is art but sometimes that doesn’t even really feel safe in this…

Existing as a human being is hard AND for a multitude of reasons! I’m not seeing the part where she was wrong…?
Among the celebrities defending the dance floor were Rochelle Jordan, DJ John Summit, and, as of Wednesday, Madonna, who posted to Instagram with the caption, “If your dance floor feels dead, maybe you’re playing the wrong music,” along with a carousel of pictures in which Madonna is wearing an array of fabulous boots and heels.

I should add that Madonna is also promoting an upcoming album, Confessions II…Is this a clue?
On Monday, Charli posted the lyrics to her new single “SS26” on her Substack, in which she discusses how nothing matters and we’re all doomed (at least, that’s what I’m projecting onto it). “When the world is gonna end no hope for any of it / Yeah we’re walking on a runway that goes straight to hell / Nothing’s gonna save us not music fashion or film.”
You heard it from Charli first: nothing is going to save us. So might as well enjoy the dancefloor while you still can…
