Fabulous Courtroom Sketches to Display in Your Home

Welcome back to Saturday Night Social.

In a world where an iPhone can document any unremarkable moment and generative AI can fabricate almost anything, only one place remains sacred: the courtroom.

For some reason, our funny little justice system still clings to the tradition of sending an illustrator into a courtroom to conjure the scene for the outside world, and after falling down a rabbit hole of courtroom art for the better part of a day, the reason has presented itself to me: No camera could do what a courtroom sketch does. With one angle, gesture, and facial expression, an entire day of drama is distilled in a single image. It’s beautiful.

Even more captivating is when a courtroom artist captures the unmistakable faces of beloved pop culture icons, who we can always count on to appear in court for a divorce, defamation suit, or some other legal saga involving their complicated relationship with fame and money.

I want to hang courtroom art all over my home, and you should too. Not just for the celebrity of it all, but for the history—Courtroom sketches may be just one of the last fields where the human touch is still valued above technological innovation, and for that reason, they must be appreciated. Consider displaying these stunning pieces of art on your home gallery wall or kitchen or bedside!

Halle Berry’s Crutches Serve

By Mona Shafer Edwards

In 2012, Halle Berry arrived at her custody hearing against her ex, Gabriel Aubrey, on crutches after breaking her foot while filming the movie Cloud Atlas, but of course your pop-culture-loving bestie would know that, and thank you endlessly for their very own copy.

Amy Winehouse Showing Off Her Legs

by Pricilla Coleman

In 2009, Winehouse was acquitted in her trial for allegedly assaulting a fan, but I’m sure you could gather that for yourself based on what this tableau evokes. The way the eye moves around the frame, bouncing from beehive to bailiff, tells the full story.

Kris Jenner Giving Mom-ager Justice

By Mona Shafer Edwards

In 2022, Kris Jenner took the stand in her defense during the defamation trial brought by her son Rob Kardashian’s ex-fiancée, Blac Chyna, and no home is complete without Kris’s watchful eye.

A Beautiful Portrait of Minnie Driver

By Bill Robles

Driver went to court with her neighbors, as celebrities oft do, and came out with this lovely portrait by the talented late court artist Bill Robles.

Charles Manson in Motion

By Bill Robles

Another Robles classic. Could an iPhone do that? Hell no.

Winona Ryder Vs. Saks Fifth Avenue

By Mona Shafer Edwards

I have no notes for this stunning rendition of Ryder’s 2002 shoplifting case.

Rudy Giuliani Being Rudy Giuliani

By Jane Rosenberg

Another masterwork by courtroom sketch artist Jane Rosenberg, whose piercing documentation of Rudy Giuliani’s descent into madness is one of the most exciting things going on right now in American art.

Your New Yorker friend would kill to hang this in their studio apartment.

A Handcuffed Lindsay Lohan in her Louboutins

By Mona Shafer Edwards

Had to save the best for last. Here, Lohan appeared in court after violating her probation in 2010. But it might have all been worth it for this gem. Hang it in the Louvre.
