McDreamy has something he would like to say, so everyone listen up: He would not like to be a member of Congress, OK? So can EVERYONE stop asking him?!
This week, Maine Democrats were thrown into turmoil after allegations of sexual assault prompted US Senate Democratic candidate Graham Platner to end his campaign. As Democrats race against the clock to find a replacement before the end-of-the-week deadline, the actor, Mainer, and People’s 2023 Sexiest Man Alive Patrick Dempsey would just like to take a moment of everyone’s time to say: Not I. On Wednesday, Dempsey published an open letter in the Portland Press Herald announcing that he is NOT running for the US Senate…Was he running before? No. Has he ever run for office? Also, no. He would just like to announce that he is not going to.
“Over the past several days, I’ve been asked a question more than once: Would you ever run for the United States Senate?” he wrote. “It’s flattering, and I don’t take it lightly. I love my home state of Maine. I care deeply about the people who live there and, like so many Americans, I’m concerned about the direction our country is heading.” Look, for all I know, he is a nice guy, but I’m still going to make fun of him for this, because why do I have the slightest theory that no one was asking him to run?

“As I reflected on all of this, I kept coming back to one question: Do I truly want to serve in Congress? After a lot of thought, I realized the answer is no. Not because public service isn’t honorable — it absolutely is. But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I’ve already built.” The people are on a time crunch. We don’t have time for this 2028 soft launch!
He goes on to outline the kind of replacement he’d like to see, someone like him, but not him, and his work at the Dempsey Center, a cancer care center he opened in Maine in 2008, where he has found fulfillment in striving to make “someone else’s life a little better.”
“So no, I’m not running for office. But I am asking something of the people who do. Lead with humility. Tell the truth. Put people before party.” Great message, Patrick. And I guess this is a perfect time as any to announce that I, too, have decided not to run for Senate. I’m sorry, Maine.
