From A Star Is Born to The Good Place, Here Are Your 2019 Golden Globe Nominees
EntertainmentThe 76th Golden Globe Award nominees were announced Thursday morning and they’re only marginally disappointing. There’s more Green Book representation than there should be, while Mandy, Skate Kitchen, and one of the best films of the past decade, Sorry to Bother You, were all snubbed. For the most part, though, a healthy selection of television shows (Sharp Objects) and movies (Black Panther) that people actually liked in 2018 are included, and what more could we ask for? Perfection? Please.
The TV category appears to be more discouraging than the film categories (Game of Thrones fans, sit down, your beloved program wasn’t eligible this year). The Good Place is up for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy against Barry, Kidding, and what is The Kominsky Method? Donald Glover (Atlanta) deserves to take home Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, but he’ll have to beat out Bill Hader and Jim Carrey. He should beat out Bill Hader and Jim Carrey.
All the big films (Black Panther, A Star Is Born) are nominated for Best Motion Picture: Drama alongside well-warranted picks (BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk) and, for no comprehensible reason, Bohemian Rhapsody (and this is coming from someone who would take a bullet for Rami Malek, though it would probably just bounce off his perfect jawline. He wouldn’t even say hi to my friends afterward.)
There’s a glaring lack of Viola Davis in the Best Actress category (Widows is nowhere to be seen on the list, actually), but the cast of Crazy Rich Asians is getting their due. Also: Eighth Grade’s 15-year-old star Elise Fisher is up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which rules.
Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Sandra Oh, who’s nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama this year for Killing Eve, will host the show, which is a nice switch-up from the usual suspects, a la Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers.
The 2019 Golden Globes air January 6 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
