R.I.P. Hipster Barbie™. The 20-year-old Portland native who created the satirical account to take jabs at Instagram’s try-hard community, is saying peace to her 1.3 million followers.
Darby Cisneros initially launched the SocalityBarbie IG account to make fun of how people use the app. In the process, she says Hipster Barbie has successfully drawn attention to the fake-ness of social media, through her posed snapshots of Barbie looking hipster, serene and cultured.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Cisneros—having previously run the account anonymously—revealed her identity and announced that she’s killing Hipster Barbie.
“Never in 1 million years did I think it would receive the amount of attention that it did,” she writes, “but because of that it has open the door to a lot of great discussions like: how we choose to present ourselves online, the insane lengths many of us go to to create the perfect Instagram life, and calling into question our authenticity and motives.”
