Because we live in a country in which many people are completely baffled by the idea that breasts are not filthy sin-pillows, women who breastfeed in public are frequently harassed, chastised and/or asked to leave. Well, sorry, boob-fearers, but it actually turns out that the law explicitly protects breastfeeding women in almost all 50 states.
As the Huffington Post notes, forty-seven states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have laws in place that explicitly permit moms to breastfeed in public. Of the remaining three, South Dakota and Virginia exempt breastfeeding mothers from public indecency or nudity laws. Only Idaho — poor, lonesome, Idaho — has no laws in place to protect breastfeeding moms (although they are exempt from jury duty, which is nice, I guess).
The Huffington Post has thoughtfully created a map outlining these aforementioned breastfeeding laws, but they could have probably achieved the same effect more plainly if they just illustrated an image of Idaho glaring disapprovingly at a nipple with a crying infant in the background. Get it together, Idaho.
