J.K. Rowling has reached out to the teenaged survivor of a terrible shooting, sending her a letter from “Dumbledore,” a wand, and a Hogwarts acceptance letter.
That’s according to the Telegraph (via The Mary Sue). In July, 15-year-old Cassidy Stay survived a horrifying attack by her aunt’s ex-husband, playing dead until he left—and then immediately phoned the police to alert them he was headed for her grandparents. But her parents and siblings were murdered. At their memorial service, she quoted The Prisoner of Azkaban: “Happiness can be found even in the darkest times if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
No, you’re crying.
Supporters moved by the story set up a Facebook group asking J.K. Rowling to meet with Cassidy. When the author got wind of the girl’s story, she sent the care package, including the letter of condolence in the voice of Dumbledore. A mod posted:
This afternoon, I talked to a friend of Cassidy’s who confirmed that JK Rowling did, in fact, write her a personalized letter from “Dumbledore” (hand-written with purple ink). She was also sent a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts with a school supply list, along with the 3rd book with JK’s autograph.
A spokesperson for Rowling confirmed she’d sent a package, but wouldn’t disclose any more details. Good grief that woman is a class act.
