Joy Behar Explains Why She Married Her Boyfriend Of 29 Years

“After a honeymoon for 29 years, we decided to ruin it and get married,” said Behar of the vows she exchanged this summer when The View returned from hiatus this morning. She rattled off a list of the top ten reasons she got married that included “Now that gay marriage is legal in New York, ‘spousal equivalents’ is so 2010″ and “Joy is embarrassed asking about senior discounts for her boyfriend.”

After her list of prepared zingers, Whoopi prompted Joy to reveal why she really decided to wed after twenty-nine freaking years. Joy spoke of a lesbian couple who were not allowed (by the hospital) to see each other while one was on her death bed because they weren’t married and the tax breaks that married people get, specifically after one of them passes. She said that the fight for gay marriage to be legalized in New York “brought to my consciousness why gays needed to get married, and I thought it was a good reason for me to get married and so did Steve. So we did it.”
