In an elegant and brief statement posted to Twitter Thursday afternoon, actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” she wrote, continuing:
The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal healthcare a reality.
How a woman who has been wealthy her whole life and famous for half of it—through her work on Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and Veep—can be thoughtful and grounded enough to acknowledge her fortunate circumstances, call for universal healthcare, and support unions in a Twitter statement is already admirable. Even more so when considering that she’s under the duress of a recent cancer diagnosis.
Get better, JLD.
