In a recent interview on the set of Ellen Degeneres’ talk show, conversation took a turn from the generic promotional banter when Ellen brought up Kirsten Dunst’s battle with depression. Dunst, obviously wary to address such a private part of her life, responded, “It’s not something I feel like totally comfortable talking about but yeah, it’s a very personal thing.” But then she dived right into a retelling of how the stresses of Hollywood caused her to take a break from the scene completely:
“I definitely took a little bit of a break. And also, when you’re in your twenties you need figure things out and take a step back. I had been acting so long, all my life. I think I just needed a little bit of some perspective. It was good for me and it re-inspired what I do, too.”
She went on to speak about the double standard that people have when it comes to the public’s perception of actresses:
“It’s interesting as an actress, you’re supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable and have this side to you. But then you’re supposed to be super sociable and ‘on’ and like nice to everybody. That’s a weird dichotomy. It’s a lot to ask of a person. It’s not a normal thing. I avoid the red carpet as much as possible. You have to do it to promote your movies obviously but you won’t see me at an event just for the sake of it.”
I have to admit I’ve been harboring a distaste for Kirsten and her career ever since my boyfriend told me about the time she asked him out on a date years and years ago. I was resentful of her career’s comeback, because I am a bitchy girl like that — but now that she’s going around being honest and awesome all over my TV, I have to give credit where credit is due.
