Lily Collins Plays a Woman Struggling With Anorexia in Trailer for To the Bone

Entertainment

Marti Noxon has been a writer, producer, and sometimes director for so many great TV shows from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to UnREAL. Now she’s set to release her directorial debut with To the Bone, a new movie starring Lily Collins as a sardonic young woman named Ellen who is struggling with anorexia.

It’s a story that is largely personal for Noxon as it’s based on her own experiences recovering from anorexia. But even though Noxon’s television credits are stacked, it apparently took her years to get To the Bone off the ground. She attributes this to the fact that many people in Hollywood, mainly men it seems, just didn’t understand the movie.

“It seemed like male producers didn’t understand,” she told IndieWire about shopping the movie. “I was told a number of times that it was just too small a topic. I was like, ‘What? Really?’ Half the movies that get made are about some really talented white guy who understands jazz, you know? So many of the indie movies that get made are not about topics that touch millions and millions of people.”

Is that perhaps a La La Land burn, Marti?

The movie premiered at Sundance and debuts on Netflix July 14.Consider that movies focused on eating disorders haven’t seen a boom time since the ‘80s after-school special, To the Bone is sure to be a welcome update.
