Lisa Rinna Would Kindly Request You Don’t Vote for Spencer Pratt

The first experiment with handing a reality star political power didn't go so well, she reminds us all.

Lisa Rinna Would Kindly Request You Don’t Vote for Spencer Pratt

One of reality TV’s most iconic villains has spoken: do not elect one of us as your mayor. While speaking to Variety on the red carpet for last night’s American Music Awards, Rinna (who identifies as being “very political”) said that, while she’s not ready to say who she is supporting in LA’s upcoming mayoral primary, she’s very clear on who she won’t be supporting. “Not a reality star,” she quipped. And she didn’t even take her sunglasses off to do it.

While Rinna never actually mentions him by name, it’s not hard to figure out that she’s talking about former Hills villain Spencer Pratt, the only reality star currently in the race to be LA Mayor. Pratt has been gaining traction in the polls for attacking incumbent mayor Karen Bass on the city’s handling of the Palisades fire, in which he and his wife and fellow former Hills star Heidi Montag lost a home. Now, the campaign that seemed like something of a joke when it started has emerged as one of the top two contenders just ahead of the June 2 primary.

A reality star whose long-shot campaign plays on the anger of a specific population and somehow results in that person being elected to a position of enormous power for which they are clearly unqualified? If that sounds eerily familiar to you, Rinna agrees, telling Variety, “I love him, but we’ve already done that. We’re not going to do that again.” She went on to say, “I’m a reality person. You wouldn’t want me as mayor, really. I mean, let’s just face it. I love him. I think he’s amazing. I just think we did that.”

Instead, the reality star says we should have—shockingly—someone with political experience. “Let’s have somebody that’s already been mayor of San Jose, or whoever,” referring to Matt Mahan, who is actually running for governor. “This is why she should not run for office,” the Variety reporter laughs. “Exactly!” Rinna replies, clarifying she likes Mahan “for governor.”

Honestly, “Lisa Rinna as Mayor of LA” is one of the less upsetting versions of the reality-star-to-politician pipeline I’ve seen in my lifetime. Let her do it!
