Ma'am, You're 14: the Cash Me Outside Girl Says 'Hi Bich'

EntertainmentMusic

Y, surprisingly: Danielle Bregoli, “Hi Bich/Whachu Know”

N: Speaking of knotty cultural topics, here’s a glimpse into Cash Me Outside Girl’s future: boring throwback rock ‘n’ roll that’s so inconsequential it barely registers on the meter. Miley Cyrus’s back-to-whiteness campaign has been disappointing on a cultural level as well as a musical one; she truly has pipes, but seems uninterested in using them on the Younger Now tracks released thus far. The dull “Week Without You” is the worst offender yet, positioning itself as a make-out jam for the backseat of an Eldorado, but more likely going straight to the top via the pipe-in music at the Mandee. A disappointment! —Julianne Escobedo Shepherd

Fuck No: Meanwhile, Miley’s sister Noah Cyrus, who is trying to make a pop career happen, is out here collaborating with XXXTentación, whose name you might recognize from the utterly horrific charges of serial domestic abuse, alleged by his former girlfriend—including when she was pregnant—or perhaps that time, after the abuse allegations were revealed in full, he took to Instagram to refute them by saying “I’ma fuck y’all little sisters in they throats.” You don’t need to listen to it. Instead, how about getting excited for the new Sasha Go Hard, out next week.

Y: New York songwriter Mia LJ, 19, examines her attraction to both men and women in this exploration of her sexuality, the video for “Ambiguous.” It’s a moody, sensual song and so the video matches; what stands out most to me is how great it is that we’re at a point where women are controlling this type of narrative on their own on a trap beat, rather than the usual making-out-for-dudes trope. –JES

No likey: Gwen Stefani featuring Blake Shelton, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas”—I would rather let an assortment of one to five hundred rats, mice and ferrets run all over my naked flesh than listen to this song again. –Megan Reynolds

Maybe: Demi Lovato, “Sexy Dirty Love”—If I heard this synthy, glossy pop nightmare at a Nordstrom Rack while pawing through a stack of discounted Hobo wallets, I wouldn’t be mad. I might even sing along. Maybe. –MR

Yah: Tove Styrke, “Mistakes” – I have a soft spot in my heart for Swedish Whos (to borrow the words of Jezebel’s Bobby Finger.) There are just so many young Swedish pop stars! Who may never be Thems! Consider Tove Styrke (not to be confused with Tove Lo, who had that one hit about boning with her baby-making body) who finished in third place on Swedish Idol in 2009. Anyway, her latest song is “Mistakes” and it’s very cute. – Hazel Cills

Always: Suzanne Ciani, “The First Wave – Birth of Venus” – I’m also just really feeling this 1982 song from the great pioneering electronic artist Suzanne Ciani. I’ve been listening to this record all week and it chills me out. I’ve included it here because time is a construct! – HC
