The notoriously anti-China ex-Senator has been swayed by fancy light fixtures.

Marco Rubio Discovers Ceilings During China Visit

Longtime China skeptic Marco Rubio appears to have found at least one thing he likes about Beijing: interior design.

The Secretary of State is currently accompanying President Trump on a high-stakes summit in China. But during a bilateral meeting on day one, Rubio apparently forgot he was there for tense geopolitical negotiations and instead became utterly spellbound by the ornate ceiling inside the Great Hall of the People.

Footage of Rubio staring upward, pointing excitedly at the ceiling’s intricate patterns, and giving the display a thumbs-up has quickly gone viral online. At one point, Rubio even waves Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over to admire it with him.

Based on that reaction, you’re probably expecting something on par with the Sistine Chapel. Instead…it’s a light fixture. Not only has the clip been taking over X in the U.S., but Chinese viewers are reportedly obsessed too. According to the South China Morning Post, many interpreted Rubio’s enthusiastic gestures as a sign of admiration for China’s craftsmanship.

Which is, frankly, hilarious, given that Rubio’s entire political brand is being aggressively anti-China. In fact, Rubio is the first sanctioned U.S. Secretary of State to visit the country. As a senator, Rubio was sanctioned twice in 2020 after spearheading measures against Chinese officials over accusations of human rights abuses against Uyghurs and crackdowns on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

So how was our fearless Secretary of State allowed into the country?

According to multiple reports, China appears to have found a deeply unserious diplomatic loophole after Trump appointed Rubio Secretary of State: officials simply quietly began using a different Chinese character for the first syllable of Rubio’s surname.

Two diplomats told AFP the phonetic tweak effectively allowed Beijing to maintain Rubio’s sanctions under the old spelling while still permitting his entry into the country.

China’s embassy insisted this week that the sanctions only applied to Rubio’s “words and deeds” as a senator. Apparently becoming Secretary of State grants diplomatic absolution.

Baby’s first ceiling wasn’t Rubio’s only memeified moment from the trip.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also posted a photo of Rubio aboard Air Force One wearing the now-infamous gray Nike Tech “Venezuela” tracksuit that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro wore during his capture earlier this year—immediately sending social media into another spiral.

“Secretary Rubio rocking the Nike Tech ‘Venezuela’ on Air Force One!” Cheung wrote on X.

The internet quickly dubbed the look “Maduromaxxing,” with users comparing Rubio side-by-side to Maduro. As you can see, Rubio’s is a noticeably tighter fit…

Hopefully now that negotiations are underway, Rubio can take his eyes off the ceiling and focus on the business at hand.
