Meet India's First Transgender TV News Anchor

Latest

Last week, on India’s Independence Day, Padmini Prakash became the first transgender woman to read the news on live TV, a great step for the country who legally recognized third gender citizens back in April.

Prakash, an accomplished classical dancer, TV actress, and activist for transgender and other sexual minority causes, joined Lotus New Channel, a station based in Coimbatore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu last month. She was so popular that she has already been promoted to the 7 pm prime news spot. Times of India reports:

“We are supportive of Padmini because she is very hard-working,” Lotus News Channel chairman GKS Selvakumar said. “After initial trials, we were convinced that she had the potential to be an excellent news anchor.”

Despite her experience, she was pretty nervous:

“I was very worried because I also had to focus on my diction and maintain a steady narrative pace to ensure that there was clarity and viewers could understand me.”

But it looks like she did quite well. Congratulations to her for the huge accomplishment!
