Among Megan Thee Stallion’s most relatable, they’re-just-like-us qualities is that she is a true poster, which was put to good use over the weekend as news broke of her split from Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson.
Before confirming the news in statements to various celebrity gossip outlets on Saturday (including People and TMZ), Meg first deployed the most lethal genre of post: a white text, black background rant that didn’t name anybody but made it clear who she meant.
“Cheating, had me around your whole family playing house… got ‘cold feet.’ Holding you down through all your HORRIBLE mood swings and treatment towards me during your basketball season now you don’t know if you can be ‘monogamous’????” Woof.
In her statement, Megan left no questions about the reason for the breakup: “I’ve made the decision to end my relationship with Klay. Trust, fidelity and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship, and when those values are compromised, there’s no real path forward.”
She’s been linked to Thompson since last summer, when they hard-launched on a gala red carpet. They seemed to be very happy together: Meg told People in January that the relationship was “one of the first times” she’s ever been just “comfortable.” And shortly after she began her two-month run in Moulin Rouge! The Musical in March, she posted a photo with Thompson, who appeared to be in New York to (at least in part) support in her new role.
But Meg’s tenure on Broadway has also been a little rocky: After she went to the hospital in the middle of a performance earlier this month, a representative said she’d been diagnosed with “extreme exhaustion.” She later posted on social media that she’d been “pushing myself past my limits lately, running on empty, and my body finally said enough.” (You know what else is exhausting? Giving and giving to a partner who’s not giving back.)
And her afternoon of drama appeared to catch up with her during curtain call on Saturday evening, when she teared up as the audience gave her a standing ovation.
I shudder to think about whatever bullshit may be coming her way on various social platforms in the coming days, but at least for now, the public narrative seems very much on her side.
