New Mexico Women Poised to Make History After Primaries
PoliticsThe wave of progressive women winning primaries continues, and New Mexico’s Deb Haaland is one of the biggest stand-outs from Tuesday’s primary elections, which were held in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, Alabama, South Dakota, and Mississippi.
CNN projects that Haaland won the primary for New Mexico’s Democrat-heavy 1st Congressional District, making her likely to become the first Native American woman in Congress. Haaland, who has the backing of Planned Parenthood and former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, seeks to fill Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s seat; Grisham won the Democratic nomination for governor on Tuesday. According to Emily’s List, no state has ever elected a Democratic woman of color as governor, and Lujan Grisham is one of the women in the 2018 midterms poised to be first. “Tonight, New Mexico made history,” Haaland said in her speech, warning Donald Trump “and the billionaire class” that “the blue wave is coming.”
