The trailer for Netflix’s first original feature film, The Discovery, looks like a pleasantly dark and deep dive into existentialism, death and the afterlife. The trailer hits a strange, enigmatic note that’s especially creepy paired to the blissfully morose soundtrack of “Only the Lonely.”
Here, Robert Redford plays a scientist who confirms that the afterlife is real, while Rooney Mara and Jason Segel star as grim lovers with seemingly opposing views on the discovery. Netflix describes the movie as “a love story set in a world where the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and as a result millions of people start taking their own lives to get there.”
There’s one line of dialogue in the entire trailer, from Segel: “People are just gonna keep killing themselves.” Note the scene featuring a poster in the background that reads: “Suicide is not the answer. Stay in this life.” This certainly looks provocative.
