A Portland, Oregon queer performer who throws an annual coat-and-sweater drive to help the homeless asked a faith-based organization to host his event—and got a rejection call-back. But maybe mission reps will reconsider their position, after drawing flak.
The Portland Mercury alt-weekly reports that Jeffrey Darling—whose stage name is Fannie Mae—asked the Portland Rescue Mission to host his Queer Quistmas party, but was told via voice mail message that donors would be upset. Pissed, Darling went to the media, which got the attention of a homeless advocate who’s since asked mission reps to meet with folks from the local LGBT community and learn how their decision “might be hurtful.” To their credit, it sounds like the Rescue Mission has agreed to the meeting.
