R. Kelly Finally Addresses Trans Son, Saying, 'Don't Call Her My Son'
LatestEarlier this month, R. Kelly’s 14-year-old child Jaya came out as a transgender boy and changed his name to Jay. The singer had been silent on the news until this morning when he was asked about it during a live radio interview. He didn’t exactly come across as supportive.
Being interviewed for his hometown radio station, Chicago’s WCGI, Kelly was asked to address “report of [his] daughter becoming [his] son.” His response was obtuse.
“You don’t really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming my son,” he said. “Don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit. You know what I’m saying? Real talk.”
He actually said “real talk.”
Kelly implied that the news of his son was a rumor that wasn’t to be believed, despite the fact that Jay came out personally, in his own words, via his Ask.fm account. Kelly then somehow pivoted the conversation to be about his finances before saying:
You save money so your kids can go to college—no matter what they are or who they are. They’re still your kids, you gotta support them.
So he’s financially supportive of Jay? Kelly did add at the end:
You gotta know there’s a back story. There’s a background. That’s why you can’t judge nobody.
