On the latest episode of Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, our host took a beautiful rhetorical dump on the Republican Party, whose comrades in the Senate recently rejected four extremely sane measures restricting gun sales one week after 49 people were murdered in an Orlando gay club.
“The party of Lincoln, named for the beloved president who died peacefully of natural causes at a ripe old age, wasn’t always in the holster of big gun,” Bee explains.
Ronald Reagan, for example, banned open carry while governor of California “as soon as the Black Panthers discovered it applied to them.” Eventually, after getting shot in the chest by someone who was very much not a member of the Black Panthers, Reagan did push for an assault weapons ban and spoke out in support of the Brady Bill, named after James Brady, who was permanently disabled during the assassination attempt. As Bee puts it, “there’s nothing like getting shot to put you on the side of gun control.”
