Sarah Huckabee Sanders: '[Americans] Knew What They Were Getting When They Voted for Donald Trump'

• During today’s press briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders had a rare moment of truth and clarity. When asked about the president’s tweets about MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski, Sanders said that the American people, “elected a fighter… they knew what they were getting when they voted for Donald Trump.” But it was a brief and fleeting moment of truth—an accidental acknowledgment that everyone knows the lazy depths of Trump’s misogyny—before she corrected herself. “Everybody wants to make this an attack on a woman—what about the constant attacks that he receives or the rest of us?” she asked. “I’m a woman, I’ve been attacked by that show multiple times, but I don’t cry foul because of it,” Sanders added, as she cried foul. Before ending the briefing, she informed the press that God was her role model. It’s a good thing he’s a forgiving God because she’s certainly going to need it. [CNN]
• The Trump administration has issued its revised travel ban aimed at six predominantly Muslim countries. [AP]
• The travel ban goes into effect tonight at 8 p.m. It temporarily prevents people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from getting visas for 90 days and bans refugees for 120 days. In addition, it narrows the definition of “family,” excluding everyone from grandparents to fiancees. As Vox notes, the ban hints “that refugees who’ve been placed with a resettlement agency won’t be allowed to come to the US unless they have close family members here—which would severely limit refugee resettlement in the US over the next 4 months.” [Vox]
• The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment that would repeal Authorization for Use of Military Force, a terrible bill approved in 2001 after the attacks on 9/11. The amendment, introduced by Representative Barbara Lee (R-CA), would revoke the president’s power to declare war on Al-Qaeda or other terrorist groups like ISIS without Congressional approval. • Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State as well as the vice chair of Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, has asked every state to provide the Commission with “names, birthdates and Social Security information for that state’s voters going back to 2006.” Kobach is looking for evidence of voter fraud, a pet issue of the Trump administration. His own history of overseeing elections is unsurprisingly questionable. [Kansas City Star]

• Today, the House of Representatives passed two measures targeting undocumented workers. The first cuts federal funding for “sanctuary cities” and the second, known as “Kate’s Law,” imposes stricter sentencing on convicted criminals who have entered the United States illegally. Both bills are priorities of the Trump White House. Democrats largely opposed the bill defunding sanctuary cities but offered little opposition to “Kate’s Law.” [The Hill]
• Defense Secretary James Mattis said that the Syrian government took President Trump’s warning “seriously” and decided against using chemical weapons. [Reuters]
