SNL Writer Paula Pell Is Developing a New Comedy for HBO

Latest

Paula Pell, the woman behind some of your favorite Saturday Night Live sketches, is creating a new half-hour comedy series for HBO. The as-yet-to-be-titled series will be about a “fallen Olympic figure skater who returns home to Massachusetts to confront her former bullish coach and narcissistic mother who have cashed in on her success,” reports Deadline. Pell will also executive produce and share writing duties with Michelle Lawler. The two co-created the web series Hudson Valley Ballers, alongside SNL writer James Anderson.

The Emmy-nominated Pell has written for Saturday Night Live since 1995 and is responsible for some of the show’s most memorable characters such as Debbie Downer and the Spartan Cheerleaders. She also penned the upcoming film, Sisters, which will star Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Hudson Valley Ballers recently returned with their second season and features guest appearances from Rachel Dratch and Natasha Lyonne.
