The Knot's Street Campaign Is a Cute Celebration of Terrible Marriages

In Depth

Spotted today in Washington Square Park: Evidence of The Knot’s New York street campaign, featuring sweet quotes meticulously presented with adorable fonts in Pantone-approved colors. Never mind that this particular piece of marketing is located where there are likely few people planning weddings—let’s talk about who, exactly, the wedding juggernaut has decided to quote.

Victor Hugo: Married 46 years. A notorious philanderer. His wife had some affairs of her own — very French, but not very Knot. (This quote is from Hugo’s cheerful wedding farce Les Mis; specifically it’s pulled from some rumination on the death of that bishop who let Jean Valjean steal his silver candlesticks.)

Audrey Hepburn: One broken engagement. One affair with a married man. Two marriages ending in divorce. During the second marriage, both Hepburn and her husband had extramarital affairs.

Judy Fucking Garland: Married five times. First four marriages ended in divorce. Had affairs with two married men. Had at least one bona fide extramarital affair of her own, plus several others during separations from her various husbands. (And The Knot may want to remind you that money doesn’t really matter, but if you’re trying to plan a Knot-worthy wedding, it sure as hell does.)
