Lead by example, and you’ll never go wrong… unless you’re RFK Jr., the department you’re heading is Health and Human Services, and neither you—nor the people you’re in charge of—can go a minute without getting caught in some mad-lib headlines.

According to a CNN report published Friday, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH) Dr. Brian Christine, who assumed office in November, is one of the administration’s officials in charge of updating the nation on hantavirus—and just like his boss, he’s got quite the dizzying list of disqualifications, like being a far-right podcaster, staunch anti-abortionist, and anti-vaxxer. Which is… so far, so MAGA. Oh, and he’s also a penile implant specialist.

As ASH, Christine is meant to be our top public health official in charge of infectious diseases, family planning and women’s health—aka, the three things the administration wants to ruin as much as possible. Mid-last year, the HHS decided to stop researching hantavirus; in April, it updated its Title X guidance to quietly vanish birth control; and throughout the entirety of Trump’s second term, it’s turbocharged efforts to make anti-women decisions. So maybe it’s the fact that Christine supported things like “corrective care” for minors seeking trans-affirming care that really got him the job.

Before he joined the administration, Christine also ran podcasts to brandish his extreme views, called “Common Sense” and “Erection Connection.” Funny how language like that gets a pass, but crucial information about abortion care doesn’t

In podcasts, Christine has called Roe a bad decision, advocated for Alabama’s near-total abortion ban, and said abortion bans shouldn’t include exceptions for rape or incest. During an episode of Common Sense in 2022, he also compared Nazi Germany to the Biden administration, saying, “There aren’t concentration camps in the United States, but there’s no question that conservatives feel threatened. There’s no questions that conservatives like myself and others feel like the government is being weaponized against us.” Throughout Covid, he also repeatedly peddled misinformation and conspiracy theories about the disease, like claiming the pandemic was just some Big-Brother scheme to try and control Americans.

In a press briefing in Nebraska—where 18 people that were on a cruise ship that suffered a hantavirus outbreak are currently quarantining—Christine said, “At the [HHS], our approach is grounded in science and it’s grounded in transparency.” Unfortunately, the department’s about as scientific and transparent as a desert is wet.
