In predominantly Muslim Tajikistan, religious leaders report that there have been many more cases of men divorcing their wives by texting the words “taloq taloq taloq.” The Islamic ritual of “triple taloq” allows men to end their marriages by saying “divorce” three times and having a cleric ratify the decision. Officials say the there have been more text message divorces because men are moving abroad to find work and wind up starting new families, but Tajikistan’s religious authorities are considering banning the practice.
