To She or Not to She: Australia Is Getting a Women-Led Shakespeare Series from Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie is now at the place in her career when she can do whatever she wants, and going to Australia and producing Shakespeare plays adapted to focus on female perspectives sounds like a great project to choose for herself.

Vulture reports that Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is partnering with ABC Studios International and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to make a ten-part series that revisits the work of bro William Shakespeare, but from “female perspectives.” Each episode is meant to be a standalone story, based on one of the Bard’s plays. But there’s a twist! They’ll be injected with commentary on our “modern, global society.” Yes, you’re feeding your enemies their children’s flesh in a pie, but it’s a metaphor for, uh, Trump (?).

The production has also committed to featuring women writers and directors, thank goodness. In fact, the concept was developed by Giula Sandler (Glitch, Nowhere Boys) and will feature “diverse points of view, from writers representing the different cultures and areas within Australia, which many would not readily associate with works of Shakespeare.”

I thought I’d never want to watch another Shakespeare adaptation again as long as I lived, but Margot Robbie has turned me around.
