“The chase for the squirrel is on!” said Detroit Tigers announcer Jason Benetti in a broadcast for the ages, as a melanistic Eastern gray squirrel evaded capture from seemingly every grounds crew member at Comerica Park for far longer than you would think possible.

After entering the field in the 7th inning of last night’s matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers, the squirrel got his 15 minutes of fame in a performance that might have the next door Lions signing a new backup to Jahmyr Gibbs.

It was quite a night for local wildlife, in fact, as a fellow intruding mourning dove looked on in confusion while the squirrel had free range in the outfield.

The squirrel was finally captured with a towel and removed from the field. While the umpire congratulated and thanked the homefield crew, not everyone was so happy with its removal.
