Why, Dax, Why?

Shepard recently revealed to the masses that he's told his 11-year-old daughter he'll pay for her to freeze her eggs when she's 18.

Why, Dax, Why?

On the latest episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert, Dax Shepard revealed to the masses that he’s already offered his 11-year-old daughter the option to freeze her eggs. And once again, every time he opens his mouth, something questionable seems to come out.

“She’s saying she wants to have a baby, and I said, ‘When do you think you’ll have your first child? When you turn 18?’ I want to be supportive of whatever,” he explained. “I don’t want to plant any seeds that I’d be judgmental or whatever.”

First of all, I think Dax is already in oversharing territory. Second of all, weird…But then he keeps going!

“I said, ‘If you want to, we’ll freeze your eggs when you’re 18. I’ll pay for you to get your eggs frozen so you don’t have to think about that.’” He added that he’s “acknowledging all luck and privilege, obviously, this isn’t an option for most people. But I think given where it’s, the trajectory it would make the most sense. I think they’re going to be wrestling with the same thing every woman is. You’re gonna want to do your career….” What is he even saying!!!!

The thought I keep returning to is…Why would you say that? She’s 11! Kids talk about wanting to be moms because they’re mirroring the nurturing they see around them. I’m not sure she’s ready to start family planning before puberty. I don’t know about the Shepard household, but in this house, we’re a little more sensitive about conversations like this.

I get that Shepard is trying to come off as the supportive dad-type for his listeners, but I’d venture to say most people get a little ick-ed out by discussions of pre-pubescent girls becoming mothers. Not exactly how I would’ve framed this “supportive” parenting advice, but hey, to each their own. He and Kristen Bell definitely have their own style.

If you remember, in October, the couple raised eyebrows after Bell shared a 12th anniversary post honoring her spouse. The caption read: “Happy 12th anniversary to the man who once said to me: I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m incentivized to kill you, I never would.” Bell notably posted this during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The post attracted a range of reactions from LOL to this isn’t the cute caption you think it is, and Bell eventually limited comments.

You may be wondering: Does their PR-nightmare media illiteracy somehow make them perfect for each other? Well, Cher is wondering the same. On the same episode of Monday’s podcast, Cher joined the couple on the armchairs of doom—she and Bell have been friends since co-starring in Burlesque in 2010. Cher called Bell the couple’s “better half,” and Dax circled back to that comment a little later to challenge Cher on who Bell should be with. “No, but the truth is, I trust her,” Cher said of Bell. “So you must have something that I don’t see.” Cher is dropping hints.

What we have to remember at the end of the day is that men sometimes—more often than not—say dumb shit. They can say whatever they want without a filter. Stuff like, “Hey! I’m heavily incentivized to kill my wife, Ha ha.” You know, because they have rights.

Every day I live in fear of the next unhinged thing he’ll say, and I imagine it won’t be long before another thought slips past the filters. So, until next time.
