Zendaya, Willow Smith and Kiernan Shipka Are Too Damn Cool on the Cover of W

Latest

W assembled a trio of cool teens for its April cover: Zendaya, Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka and my ruler Willow Smith, who all personify what the magazine describes as “a low-key attitude.”

There’s a darkness to this cover that I appreciate and it’s not just the lipstick. This is like the three chicks in high school who used to meet in the stairwell during 6th period to exchange books about the dark arts and borrow raggedy clothes found in their grandma’s chest in the attic.

Watch video of all three below, and read Zendaya’s interview here.

As usual, in her interview, Willow (the newly appointed Chanel ambassador), talks about the freedom she has to experiment with her style (thanks to her parents), including this cover look of her with blue-tinged twists. “I was in my bathroom yesterday and saw some safety pins on the counter and was just like, ‘Let me stab a dread real quick,’” says Willow. “When I did it, I was, like, ‘Oh, this is dope.’”

It’s a short, uneventful Q&A, but again made me realize how much Willow is me. She loves Bieber (“I love every single one of his songs”), hates 3-D films (“3-D movies make my head hurt. I can’t watch them. I prefer regular film”) and likes being weird (“I prefer to be unusual”).

Also notable: Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner talked the possibility of a Mad Men sequel, calling Shipka “the heartbeat for the show.” “The only sequel to Mad Men that I can imagine is continuing the story of Sally Draper,” he says. “I want to know what happens to her. And that is because of Kiernan.”
