A Jane the Virgin Spin-Off Will Be Born

Jane the Virgin is ending after its fifth season in 2019, but take heart: There’s a forthcoming spin-off helmed by many of the same minds behind the original, including the show’s star, Gina Rodriguez, who will be an executive producer.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the spin-off is being developed at the CW, and though it will feature a new cast, it’ll still stick to an existing storyline from the original show, because that’s generally how spin-offs work. In addition to Rodriguez, Jane alums Jennie Snyder Urman, Ben Silverman, and Brad Silberling will all executive produce, with Silberling also directing.

As for the the plot, Variety says:

The official plot details for the spinoff are being kept under wraps, but it is known that it will not be based on any characters currently appearing on “Jane the Virgin.” According to sources, the series will be an anthology with each season based on a fictional novel written by Jane Villanueva (Rodriguez), with Rodriguez potentially onboard to narrate.

A spin-off really is the ideal way to let a critically acclaimed show (Jane the Virgin won Rodriguez a Golden Globe in 2015) die a dignified death while still giving fans more of what they want. Unless what fans want is the return of Jane, in which case: I’m sorry, but everyone has been pretty clear that isn’t going to happen. Except EW, which reported:

It’s unknown whether Rodriguez or any other stars of the flagship series will appear in the potential spin-off, should it move forward.

How does one define a spin-off?
