A Literary Analysis of Cher’s Recent Tweet

Cher made a rare tweet, and we must drop everything to discuss it.

Cher, or the elusive entity behind her Twitter account, is responsible for such sage words of wisdom as, “what is going on with mycareer,” “Something is amiss with ipad,” and “I Need To Shoot My Phone.” Since she is one of the few iconic tweeters still on the dying platform, it is crucial that we heed her message.

She broke her nearly year-long Twitter hiatus with a short tweet published at 8:00 am sharp on Monday morning. What was Cher doing awake and on Twitter at 8:00 in the morning? Tweeting at such an hour suggests this message is imperative. So let’s discuss:

We’ll tackle the first sentence first because it’s a doozy: Cher said yes to something she usually says no to. Interesting. What did she say yes to? A dinner-date invitation? Life after love? Is she living out the plot of Yes, Man starring Jim Carey? By breaking her hiatus with this mysterious sentence, she draws readers in and leaves us desiring answers.

Next: “It was very sleek.” The word choice here strikes me as calculated. Isn’t everything Cher does considered sleek? Perhaps the choice of emoji can shed more light on the cryptic meaning here—The diamond emoji. The diamond emoji is class. It implies glamour and ritz, and it is indeed very “sleek.” But I would be remiss if I didn’t connect the emoji choice to another possible symbol: a diamond ring, and by extension, an engagement ring. Did Cher “say yes” to someone’s hand in marriage?

In March, engagement rumors between Cher and her partner Anthony “AE” Edwards began swirling after Cher was spotted at her son Chaz Bono’s wedding wearing a new diamond band on her ring finger as well as a pear-shaped diamond ring gifted to her by Edwards (who is 40 years her junior). If the rumors are true, and Cher is now engaged, she would be breaking a 50-year-long streak of not marrying men, which is certainly newsworthy.

Aside from a potential engagement, what else can we learn from Cher’s directive? We can start by considering saying yes to something we usually say no to, like attending a friend’s open mic night, or that fun sequin top in the back of your closet you always try on before inevitably opting for the same boring black top. It goes without saying that you should not interpret her tweet as a call to be pressured into saying yes to anything unsafe or outside your personal boundaries, but rather seek the opportunity to say yes to something outside the strict comfort zones we can habitually fall into.

So take a hint from Cher and say yes to that dinner-date invitation—or patterned tights, or adopting a cat, or that mysterious new Trader Joes dip—before it’s too late!
