All the Goth Gowns and Valentine's Day Looks on the 2019 SAG Awards Red Carpet

Unlike in years past—who could forget the millennial pink catastrophe of 2018—the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place in Los Angeles Sunday night and the looks had range: from haute blacks and blues to a handful of goth gowns and red-pinks that screamed Valentine’s Day in January. There were a few stunners. There were also a few duds.

Of the former category: the forever stylish cast of Black Panther, from left to right: Isaach de Bankolé’s pinstripe suit is classically cool, I just wish he’d opted for a wider bowtie and tucked that dang shirt in. (Hi mom.) Danai Gurira’s feathered detailing could make Cher blush. Michael B. Jordan’s Louis Vuitton by Virgil Abloh will convert you to the church of high-fashion, impractical harnesses. Lupita Nyong’o’s sexy blazer bodice and sheer, sparkly skirt by Vera Wang shouldn’t work, but it does, and well.

And now for the unconventional wedding gown section of the carpet. Constance Wu’s Oscar De La Renta dress is subtle glamour, Elizabeth Moss looks like a delightful cupcake, and who isn’t gaga for Lada Gaga’s Dior Haute Couture? We’re far from the shallow now.

Tiers on tiers on detailing on detailing: Angela Bassett is never not the best dressed person in the room, and this layered train could be pulled off by no one else. J’adore Rachel Brosnahan’s pastel goth Dior dress and Margot Robbie’s Chanel dress is kinda boring, kinda Cleopatra cosplay.

For those unafraid of color: Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Laura Harrier could be the best dressed at any homecoming; Shangela’s gown, like her performance in A Star Is Born, is better than Gaga’s; Emily Blunt went there with those interstellar sleeves. John Krasinski, hold her bag.

Okay, so there was some millennial pink. Henry Golding wore his namesake color but Gemma Chan wore the light shade and like Wu, did it in Oscar De La Renta. Yara Shahidi makes everything look cool, including this half-sheer, half-sister wives gown.

And now, for the reds: I pledge allegiance to Sandra Oh’s curly bangs, and her Christmas best. Lily Tomlin’s navy and Jane Fonda’s fiery red make a wonderful pair; Rumer Willis’s shoulder pads are magnificent.

Here are some of my personal favorite looks of the night, the goth gowns, as promised: Megan Mullally validated all of us former Hot Topic shoppers in this skeletal Alexander McQueen (which she bought off the rack); Alison Brie is definitely a poseur but that doesn’t make her weird bat cape any less dope; and Lucy Boynton went full-on haunted doll. I’m inspired.

Melissa McCarthy shined in Iorane, Patricia Clarkson put everyone else to shame, and Emma Stone wore pants. She always wears pants.

Lakeith Stanfield looked so cool, I mean, that dark brown velvet bomber!? How? What? Darren Criss, my sweet boyfriend and yours, shined in Armani (the same kind of shine as McCarthy. More silver in 2019, please). Ricky Martin’s creamy white Berluti blazer is on the money.

I love Milo Ventimiglia’s Brunello Cucinelli tux almost as much as I love his weird mustache. I hope deep-colored velvet never goes out of style in contemporary menswear. Chadwick Boseman, never one to shy away from a pattern, somehow managed to make snakeskin a classy look. Rami Malek’s classic black Dior tux is simple but effective. The sneakers have got to go.
