Cool, Laidback Glam at the 17th Annual Latin Grammy Awards

If divorced couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony could reunite for a song, “Olvídame y Pega la Vuelta” performance, and friendly (JUST FRIENDLY) kiss, then anything was possible at Thursday night’s 17th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, and I’m happy to report that the red carpet was much more interesting than the actual show itself. It’s awards show season, baby! Let’s get into it.

Bianca Landrau performed with J. Balvin and Pharrell but won mostly for this Roman goddess look in gold and golden green; it contrasts nicely with Dencia’s patterned sequined jeans and bomber, a look I’m really feeling for its vibrance and personal touch.

Jennifer Lopez changed about three times; her first slay queen look was Zuhair Murad couture and, though I’m incredibly tired of sheer looks with strategic detailing, murked us all. And Julieta Venegas’s sweet and interesting olive green gown managed carpet elegance while looking the most comfortable, a rare sight.

Amalia Mondragón rolled through in her best butt cape and La Virgen botas; Mon Laferte’s signature hair roses are the sweet capper and a pretty simple ensemble; both Roselyn Sanchez and Vikina Lopez kept it bold and classic in vibrant looks.

Sheer and lace continues having its moment, on Angelique Boyer’s dream-wisp of a thing, and on Becky G’s gilded train, and Charo Toledo’s subdued sheer stripes. I love Diana Fuentes’s fringed epaulettes, alluding to flamenco stars and matadors and, you know, Olivier Rousteing.

Guadalupe Pineda showed up in tulle tiers, while Leslie Grace and Paula Fernandes worked two versions of the same racerback, leg-slit idea.

On Ariadna Gutierrez, Alejandro Espinosa and Blanca Blanco, cut-outs and keyhole necklines defined the moment.

I love a little sparkle! Carla Morrison looked like an Oscar; Fernanda Kelly gave a little Glinda the Good Witch with that iridescence, which I covet; Nina Pastori was a badass in dangling beads and a moto jacket.

Aaron Bing’s vibrant smoking jacket contrasted with Claudia Vasquez’s ruffled cut-out gown; Daniela di Giacomo’s skirt is an optical illusion/mind trick—in this picture I can’t tell if it’s mirrored or a swan pattern, but either way I want it.

Laura Pasini is also an optical illusion in origami; Mirella Cesa’s two-piece is simple and lovely; Paulina Reza has my favorite little magic trick, a dainty floral lining in pink that makes her kelly green gown pop.

Menswear, four ways: Joss Favela in natty Sinaloa chic; Karen Martello flipping the script; Marc Anthony definitely would wear a three-piece; El Guincho’s Pablo Diaz-Reixa and Borja Rosal matched their suits and sneakers, awww.

This whole crew looks terrific; ChocQuibTown and Jessie y Joy both did awards show color-coordination; Jessie Leon’s berry dress has a similar mood to Perriko’s vacation hat; Pharrell and Helen Lasichanh went quite preppy in school uniform vibes. Until next year!
