Well, These Are Certainly the Most Cheerful F-Bombs You’ll Ever Hear on a Tennis Court

If there’s one live television moment that will always be rewardingly funny, no matter how much we progress as a species, it’s a person accidentally (and then very purposefully) peppering some naughty language into a live broadcast while an uptight television network sputters and falls over itself in outright horror. And wouldn’t you know it, French tennis star Corentin Moutet just provided an instantly legendary entry into the hall of fame for this particular canon, managing to say “fuck” an astounding seven times in the course of a post-match interview at the Queen’s Club Championships in London before the BBC and the on-court interviewer disengaged from the disastrous broadcast. Suffice to say, big ol’ fines from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) are no doubt headed for Moutet, who will likely be giving back a hefty chunk of the £33,000 he earned in a win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, while the BBC could face some serious fines of its own from the British communications regular, Ofcom. But it was all worth it for Moutet’s irrepressibly cheeky swearing, as he decided to fully lean into troll mode on live TV. It really must be witnessed.

The very first F-bomb, we’re willing to believe may have been a genuine mistake. The interviewer is asking Moutet about the difficulty of physically returning Perricard’s powerful serves at 142 mph, and Moutet is acknowledging his opponent’s power, when the swear slips in organically: “That’s so frustrating. You know, when I was on match point, the second serve, you hit it in the middle, whatever you do you just put the ball in the court. And then he hits me with 142, and I was like fuck, I would have to serve…” Moutet then trails off as the crowd murmurs at the live swear, realizing that he just let some local color slip out.

The interviewer, meanwhile, specifies “No f-bombs, please,” before sticking the mic back in Moutet’s face, at which point he immediately decides to throw caution to the wind by just responding with “fuck, fuck, fuck,” to roars from the crowd.

The poor interviewer is naturally shocked and horrified by this, lapsing into a panicked “nonono!” She then, apparently badly misjudging Moutet’s willingness to be a top-tier tennis troll, attempts to ask him another question: “Apologies for the language there. I’m going to ask you one more question, so please keep it clean.” The diabolical Moutet perceptibly nods at this request and keeps a straight face, setting the hook like the madman he is. She proceeds to ask the most simplistic question she can piece together in this moment under extreme duress, and Moutet replies in the way we all know he must: Yet another “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” to the delight of the crowd, now fully on board with his attempt to singlehandedly derail the broadcast.

“Okay Corentin, we need to improve that for the next round, apologies everyone,” stammers the interviewer as Moutet laughs at the chaos he has wrought.

Corentin Moutet is currently ranked #36 in the world via ATP, and has become known for such “bad boy” antics since his debut, having once been expelled from the Federation of French Tennis in 2022 for repeated bad sportsmanship and petty behavior. For all intents and purposes, he seems to have cultivated a persona akin to Andy Samberg’s legendary tennis jerk in HBO’s hilarious 2015 sports mockumentary 7 Days in Hell, although as far as we can tell he’s yet to have a threesome on the court during a live tennis match. But hey, he’s still got time. As infractions go, this one is more funny than it is foul, playfully highlighting the pointless stock that individuals and broadcasters put into so-called inherently naughty language. At least it wasn’t in anger, right? These are pretty much the most cheerful F-bombs you’ll ever encounter. How can you not chuckle?
